2017 Winners of the Lois Pickard Competition

 

The Lois Pickard Music Scholarship Competition was held at Birmingham Southern College Hill Hall on January 14. Eighteen gifted and talented young musicians competed for 1st and 2nd Place Awards in the categories of Piano, Strings, Brass and Winds. Judges for the Competition were Dr. Christopher Steele, Samuel Nordlund, Deanna Sirkot and over-all Judge Dr. Blake Richardson, Director of the Alabama Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Winners in the Piano Category were:

Thirteen year old Luke Turner from Tuscaloosa 1st Place, and thirteen
year old Eleanor Lee also from Tuscaloosa was the 2nd Place winner.

Winners in the String Category were:

Sixteen year old Haeun Kim who attends Indian Springs School was 1st
Place, and fourteen year old Bethany Simon from Montgomery received the
2nd Place Award

Winners in the Brass/Winds Category were:

Seventeen year old Lindsey Waggoner was chosen as 1st Place and played
the flute. 2nd Place winner was seventeen year old clarinetist K'mya
Burrell. Both girls attend The Alabama School of Fine Arts.

First Place Winners each receive $1500 and Second Place Winners are
awarded $750.

Haeun Kim was named as Grand Prize Winner and will play with Alabama
Symphony Orchestra/Alabama Youth Symphony Orchestra sometime during the
next season.
